Decision one: matching silk or contrast cotton
This is the first fork in the road and honestly the most important.

Contrast cotton blouse in a bold print: The modern, comfortable, quietly stylish choice. Cotton keeps you cool through long Chennai and Bangalore functions. You do not have to pick one and stick with it forever. Most women eventually own two blouses for their favourite Kanjeevaram sarees. A matching silk one for the strictly traditional functions, and a cotton contrast one for everything else. This is how you get more wear out of a saree that cost as much as your first month's salary.
Decision two: colour of the contrast blouse
If you have decided on a contrast blouse, colour choice is where most women get stuck.
Look at the Kanjeevaram carefully. What is the base colour? What colour is the border? What colour is the pallu? These three colours give you your palette.
The safe rule is to pick a blouse colour that appears somewhere in the saree, but in a smaller quantity than the base. If the saree is red with a green border and a small gold pallu detail, a green blouse picks up the border. If the saree is purple with gold border and cream pallu motifs, a cream blouse picks up the pallu.
The bolder rule is to pick a colour that appears nowhere in the saree but complements it on the colour wheel. Deep red saree, indigo blouse. Green saree, mustard blouse. Purple saree, olive blouse. These pairings look intentional and stylish rather than accidentally random.
The rule to avoid is picking a blouse in exactly the same colour as the saree base but a slightly different shade. Two slightly different reds, or two slightly different greens, will look off in photos even if they look fine in person.
Decision three: fabric of the contrast blouse
Once you have decided on cotton contrast, the fabric quality matters.

Decision four: sleeve length
Sleeve length affects the whole look of the outfit more than most people realise.
Short sleeves: Traditional, versatile, and universally flattering. Work for all ages and all Kanjeevaram sarees. This is the safest choice.
Elbow-length sleeves: Slightly more formal and elegant. Great for evening functions and reception nights. Also more forgiving on upper arms if that is a concern.
Three-quarter sleeves: Bring an old-world elegance to Kanjeevaram silk. Pair beautifully with heavier jewellery and traditional gold sets.
Full sleeves: Best for winter functions in Bangalore, Ooty, or Coorg. Full sleeve cotton blouses under Kanjeevaram silk can look surprisingly regal for evening receptions in cooler weather.
Sleeveless: Works for younger women at reception nights and cocktail-style functions. Not usually chosen by older women or for traditional temple functions.
Decision five: neckline
The neckline you choose depends on the jewellery you will wear and the saree's border style.
If you plan to wear a long chain or a necklace that sits below the collar bone, choose a moderate round or V-neck at the front. If you plan to wear a choker or a heavy short necklace, a deeper neckline works better because the necklace will not compete with the fabric edge.
At the back, most women can wear a deeper neckline than they wear at the front. The pallu covers the back for most of the function, so a deep V-back or scoop-back works well without any modesty concerns, and it looks striking when the pallu shifts.
Piping in a contrasting colour at the neckline and sleeves adds finished detail. Simple, effective, doesn't cost much extra.
The size question that trips up online buyers
Kanjeevaram sarees are usually worn to important functions where you will be photographed. This means a badly fitting blouse will live in your family album forever. Get this right.
Your bust measurement is the primary number. Measure at the fullest part of your bust, over the bra you plan to wear. Add nothing. If you measure 34 inches, order size 34, not size 36 "for comfort".
Cross-check with the size chart on the seller's website. Every brand has slightly different measurements for the same nominal size, so a size 34 from one seller might be different from a size 34 from another.
If you are between sizes, our recommendation is to go up. It is easier to take a blouse in slightly than to let it out.
